Reality Check

A few realizations have started to settle in on me the past few days. One is that my brother's school year will start in a couple of weeks. I'll be responsible for a large chunck of the teaching and a slow and steady dread is starting to overtake me. Can we do this?! The second is that I have no job and therefore no source of income. Oddly enough, the bills don't stop coming just because you don't have a job. They should really do something about that. Ummm...yeah, so I need to make some money. Do you know anyone willing to pay for my opinions? That's about all I've got to offer at the moment.

Have you considered doing the freelance writing thing? The hours are great, and you can work from wherever. Kind of hard to get started in it, but there's certainly money out there.

In response,

Pitching articles to magazines is a great start. I would go with smaller magazines first, instead of going immediately for the big fish. My first article was published in a self-published devotional mag called "Beyond It All," but I have yet to land anything with Boundless! :)

A great way to get experience is to see what your church needs. If it's a large church at all, then they're going to need certain "technical writing" projects done that they can't pay someone to do but that need done right...press releases, email newsletters, bulletin announcements, website content...etc. Also, see what local magazines are in your area. The local lifestyle magazines that are free for people to pick up in shops almost exclusively use freelancers for their articles.

Check out some webzines that publish original stuff like poetry, prose, that kind of thing.

In the beginning, exposure is more important than money! Volunteer for stuff, and concentrate on building your byline. Every publishing credit you get is resume fodder, and the more you're published, the easier it is to get published.

www.freelancewriting.com has weekly job postings. Respond and see what you can get! Just have someone go over the contracts with/for you.

Hope that helps!

Dave
